Here is the second time lapse video compilation of the construction of NASCAR driver Jeff Burton’s 46 custom Jarrett Bay. This segment covers mid February through June 2010 and represents about 45% of our total construction time frame.
During the past couple of weeks, the boys down at Jarrett Bay have been busy working hard on all the little, less-than-exciting things that go into making a custom sport-fisher. Things like where to put the fuel and water fills, how to position the fuel tanks and making sure everything is easy to maintain and work on. Since I plan on doing a lot of the service work myself, I want to make sure I can get to everything.
This stage of the game comes with a lot of compromises – if you put this thing here, then you have to make room over there, etc. To be quite honest, most of the ideas are coming from the Jarrett Bay crew, and I just say yes or no; I really have no idea what’s the best call on some of these things, but I trust the guys working on the boat. They give me the pros and cons, but I lean on them pretty heavily.
We just got some veneer samples in, and I’m leaning on some mahogany colors – I like darker-colored woods with a satin finish. I don’t like a glossy look, and I think the satin finish gives the wood an aged look, like it’s been around for some time. Continue reading “Jeff Burton Blog: Details, Details” »
Tom O’ Connor: Welcome to Jarrett Bay Boatworks, happy to have you here with us. We’re expecting a very special visitor here in a short while. Mr. Jeff Burton, NASCAR legend, and future Jarrett Bay owner, is coming to check out his new boat!
Jeff, we followed you around Jarrett Bay here today and got an opportunity to look at your new baby – thanks for taking the moment to talk to me.
Jeff Burton: Yeah, it’s fun, I like talking about boats.
TO: Well what do you think, how’s it coming along?
I recently spent the whole day at Jarrett Bay to check up on the progress of the boat and found that the fellows already had the kitchen area and staterooms mocked up in the hull. It was pretty cool to see it all together in 3-D after only seeing it on paper. In the real world, you come across all the angles involved, and we just had to fine-tune things a little bit. But it was still pretty close to the paper – we got the fuel and water capacities just where we wanted them.
I’ve never been through the boatbuilding process before, but the boat seems to be coming along right on schedule. Maybe even a little ahead of schedule. The boys at Jarrett Bay are used to building great, big boats, and this one is coming together pretty quickly. Continue reading “Jeff Burton Blog: Things Coming Right Along” »
BEAUFORT, N.C. – A NASCAR driver is taking a break from racing around the track to work on getting some speed on the water.
Jeff Burton is building a custom speedboat with Jarrett Bay Boatworks, a Beaufort company.
“When you build a custom boat, it’s a tremendous amount of work because every single part on it you have a say. So there’s a lot of choices to make,” Burton said.
DF:We know all about your NASCAR career. Where did you grow up, and did you do any fishing and boating as a child?
JB: I grew up in southern/central Virginia. I didn’t do a lot of saltwater fishing, but we did a lot of pond fishing and fishing on the lakes. My middle brother is a big fisherman, and my dad used to take us striper fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. I grew up fishing a lot, but by far the most was done in fresh water. We had a 24-footer that we had on the lake, and we’d pull it up to the bay and go striper fishing. We always had a boat around and spent a lot of time on the lake.
DF:When you first decided to buy a boat for your family, what were you looking for? What’s your idea of the perfect boat?
Started in mid-January, Jeff Burton’s custom Jarrett Bay is unique in many ways, including the unprecedented 1 year time table (Our larger custom builds can take 3 years or more). We’ve been trying to document the crazy pace surrounding the hull in photographs, and we also followed through with the idea to set up a time lapse rig in the construction facility.
First up, a montage of photos taking you from the very beginning of the construction process, up through the final framing which took place in the beginning of March:
Then the time lapse, which is comprised of one still taken every working hour from February 12 through March 11:
This is our first foray into time-lapse, and it will certainly be a big challenge to capture an entire year of construction, but we’re really excited with the results so far! Keep an eye out for periodic updates, because we plan to add to the time lapse several times throughout the construction process.
Jeff’s primary sponsor – Caterpillar – to Power Boat With Cat® Engines
Beaufort, NC –Jarrett Bay Boatworks is excited to publicly announce details of our new 46′ Sportfisherman project quietly started in January 2010 for one of NASCAR’s most notable and respected drivers, Jeff Burton.
Plans are to deliver this landmark build to the Burton Family in under a year, and thanks to a media partnership with Marlin Magazine, families will be able to follow along with the construction through weekly photo updates, time lapse video pods, and even a blog about the custom build by Jeff himself.
After 13 years supporting NASCAR, and the second season as the primary sponsor of Jeff’s No. 31 Caterpillar Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, it was a natural choice for Burton – an avid sportfisherman – to power his boat with Cat® engines. The 46’ is Jarrett Bay’s first pod drive-powered custom build featuring Cat® C9 ACERT® engines with Zeus® Pods, rated at 575 hp each. Spending much of his time on the water with his wife and two children, Jeff sought the additional interior roominess afforded by the small footprint of the pods. Their reliability, fuel economy, and amazingly intuitive joystick control, combined with the efficient hull design of a Jarrett Bay, will provide the Burtons a unique blend of control and performance.
Yesterday afternoon we launched the 64′ Bench Mark to mark the waterline. This 64′ was designed with performance in mind and is truly an offshore fishing machine. She’s a Carolina beauty for sure – keep an eye out for more professional photos in the next few weeks.
This is our newest custom Jarrett Bay, the 64′ Bench Mark. She is in the paint booth right now and in the process of getting a fresh & clean new look! Keep watching on our web site or Facebook page as the new construction workers apply the finishing touches!
