We were pleased to put our new Farrow Blasting System to use for the first time on Fred Cory’s 36′ Luhrs, Outta Range.
Jeff, I wanted to thank you and Jarrett Bay again. You exceeded my expectations and delivered the boat when promised. I couldn’t ask for more.
Thank You,
Fred Cory, Outta Range

Last week, Tiffany and I were invited to fish with the Wall family aboard their 70’ Jarrett Bay, Ravaganza in the 10th Annual Custom Shootout. The Custom Shootout has become one of the premier billfish events with teams from all over the east coast gathering in the Bahamas to raise money for charity. It is unique that boats are open for visitors to come aboard and many of the builders attend the event. This year Roy Merritt, Richie Scheffer, Dominic Lacombe, Daniel Spencer, Jimmy Floyd, Michael Rybovich, John Vance, John Bayliss, John Whiticar and myself were there sharing laughs and stories about boats and fishing.

We are comfy in the current Ravaganza. Getting to the dock from the back side of the Big Rock on Sunday in 65 minutes – from lines out to tied to the slip – will keep us happy for a while!

The fastest conventionally powered sportfish built to date
Recognizing the hydrodynamically efficient, structurally robust, and superior sea keeping hull attributes found in Jarrett Bay Boatworks custom sportfishers, MTU has partnered in the development of the Jarrett Bay 70 to optimize her propulsion system and performance. The ultimate goal – to demonstrate how significantly improved vessel performance could be achieved through comprehensive analysis associated with proper matching of the engine, reduction gear, propeller and hull form.
An extensive series of tank tests were conducted and applied to the Jarrett Bay 70 for a “truly optimized” system, complete with custom propellers. The results of this joint effort speak for themselves. The Jarrett Bay 70 attained a top speed of 48 knots at 2450 engine rpm during her preliminary sea trials off the coast of Beaufort, North Carolina, surpassing the expectations of all aboard. At her cruise speed of 40 knots at 2000 engine rpm, each engine burned an economical 82 gph. Testing is ongoing, and more good news to share in the coming months is anticipated. If you didn’t get a chance to see Jarrett Bay & MTU’s latest bar-raising collaboration at the Miami International Boat Show in February, be sure to check her super-sleek lines, generous layout and mind-blowing MTU 16V 2000 Common Rail Marine Engines at the Palm Beach Boat Show, March 23-26, 2006.
Though you may never hear an engineer admit it, calculations alone cannot predict the transition of power that must take place to effectively propel 90,000 pounds of wood and fiberglass through a 6-foot sea at high rates of speed. That’s why MTU has partnered with Jarrett Bay Boatworks in the development of the 70-foot sportfish boat Q.E.D., named after a mathematical term that signifies “the solution has indeed been proven.”
A “solution” is exactly what MTU has delivered with its new 16V 2000 Common Rail Marine Engine. At 2400 hp, this new engine is the crown jewel in the MTU Common Rail collection and is creating quite a stir in the boating world thanks to its light weight, compact size, fuel efficiency and high power output. But MTU wanted to do more than slap a new pair of engines into just any boat. They wanted to work together with a builder to optimize the propulsion system and performance of a high-tech vessel, and that’s exactly what they’ve done with the Q.E.D. This is one Palm Beach Show boat to be certain to include on your “Must See” list!

MTU’s 16V 2000 Common Rail diesel with 1,790 kW (2,400 bhp): The engines are 20 percent more powerful than the current 16V 2000 version. It includes a common rail injection with 1,800 bar injection pressure, a new engine management and high performance turbo charging. This leads to an exceptionally lightweight and compact design and improved fuel economy.
JarrettBay’s new 70′ sport fisherman, built to showcase DaimlerChrysler MTU’s new Diesel. Appearing at International Boat Shows now, this hull and propulsion system should be capable to an excess of 50 Kts.
Twin MTU V12 – In the class of yacht engines over 2000 HP, there is a huge gap between the new MTU Common Rail engines and the best competitors engine which comes at a weight of over 6.5 tons for 2250 HP, equalling a power-to-weight ratio of 0.34 HP per kg. This is twice as much weight per HP as with the new MTU engine.

Gary and Randy, Wow! I took a ride on your new 70 yesterday. I was blown away, literally. She is soft, and fast, and quiet. Doesn’t get any better than that. Actually, the ride convinced me that speed does not override the hull design. I had been on a (competitor’s) boat at similar speeds and I felt she pounded. Thank you for arranging the sea trial.
