Beginning in the fall of 2011, Susan McCart and John Gudelsky’s Absolut Joy, a 59′ Ritchie Howell previously known as Press Time, made its way to the Jarrett Bay service yard for an extensive winter makeover. While here, our service team executed a great deal of basic mechanical upgrades, along with some necessary structural repairs and reconstruction, while trying to maintain her original builder’s intentions.
Mechanically, we were able to remedy some standard maintenance issues in her engine room and beyond, including upgrading wiring to ABYC standards, sound barrier installation and upgraded fire suppression. Our neighbors at Gregory Poole Marine Power also performed thorough engine inspections and we performed upgrades and re-positioning of a number of systems including exhaust, fuel system, batteries and chargers, and all water systems (raw, fresh and gray). We also performed a fuel polishing service, troubleshot some leaks in the oil and genset fuel systems, and rebuilt both upper and lower helm stations.
Structurally, we made hull modifications and fiberglass repairs for improved hull performance and repainted the entire exterior – the hull with John’s signature color blue.

Randy
We wanted to pass on our appreciation for yet another positive Jarrett Bay service experience. This was our 3rd haul out at Jarrett Bay and we can truly say we have always had a positive experience. We have utilized the services of many boat yards over the years. Jarrett Bay ranks among the best of the best. When your vessel is hauled there is always a sense of concern as to its well being and security. Watching a 100 plus ton vessel being hauled is always nerve racking but the Jarrett Bay lift crew is so experienced that they make it look easy. Todd and Kendra promptly scheduled and handled all of the details as they have previously and made everything seamless and easy.

Over the years as your hull becomes weathered, gathers barnacles, or is simply in need of repair, it can create drag that will drastically effect the performance of your vessel. In the past you might have had to completely sand down your hull and have it completely repainted. Now at Jarrett Bay we have a new system which can remove these surface defects and leave your topcoat and other custom artwork in tact.
Earlier this week, the Jarrett Bay service yard was the site of an in-depth training session showcasing a great new hull blasting system, known as The Farrow System.
Farrow System Explained:

The 68′ Hatteras - Safari is in for a variety of repair work, including a power wash with new bottom & prop paint, hull polish, repairing the starboard exhaust, and fuel polishing.
The importance of fuel polishing:
From time to time micro organisms become present in fuel and tend to clog fuel lines, filters & other engine components. The micro organisms live in water present in the fuel and feed off the fuel itself. Continue reading “Importance of Fuel Polishing Explained with the Hatteras 68′ “Safari”” »

Here are some more of our fall service and repair projects since the haul out for hurricane Irene.

72′ Nordhavn, “Shear Madness” – electrical work

“Sweet Hope” (64′) & “Shear Madness” (72)’ are two Nordhavn Yachts
that came in together. They were referred here by happy previous customer on 68′ Nordhavn “Grace of Tides”. Both vessels will receive bottom jobs and potentially more work once hauled.

Our service yard highly suggests dye penetrant testing of all exposed shaft tapers whenever props are removed for servicing. A dye penetrant test of the shaft tapers will identify any cracks in the keyways, or elsewhere on the taper that may not be visible with the naked eye. Chemical cleaning and magna fluxing is a better non-destructive test method and should always be done when the shaft is removed from the vessel.
