The 68′ Hatteras - Safari is in for a variety of repair work, including a power wash with new bottom & prop paint, hull polish, repairing the starboard exhaust, and fuel polishing.
The importance of fuel polishing:
From time to time micro organisms become present in fuel and tend to clog fuel lines, filters & other engine components. The micro organisms live in water present in the fuel and feed off the fuel itself. Continue reading “Importance of Fuel Polishing Explained with the Hatteras 68′ “Safari”” »

Here are some more of our fall service and repair projects since the haul out for hurricane Irene.

72′ Nordhavn, “Shear Madness” – electrical work

“Sweet Hope” (64′) & “Shear Madness” (72)’ are two Nordhavn Yachts
that came in together. They were referred here by happy previous customer on 68′ Nordhavn “Grace of Tides”. Both vessels will receive bottom jobs and potentially more work once hauled.

Our service yard highly suggests dye penetrant testing of all exposed shaft tapers whenever props are removed for servicing. A dye penetrant test of the shaft tapers will identify any cracks in the keyways, or elsewhere on the taper that may not be visible with the naked eye. Chemical cleaning and magna fluxing is a better non-destructive test method and should always be done when the shaft is removed from the vessel.

Many vessels will be southbound soon for the fall and winter seasons, and it’s important to note that a clean HVAC system is critical to ensure proper operation and efficiency. Best performance is dependant upon the proper heat transfer between the refrigerant and the seawater side of the system, regardless of the season. Higher water temperatures are less efficient in the cooling mode, just as colder water temps may negatively affect efficiency in the heat mode.

Awhile back we showed you a before and after of our refit of the classic Rybovich yacht Maradel. Several weeks ago her owner took possession and we were able to get some final photographs of all the completed work.
You can read all the details on the first post, but to recap the boat received new teak decks & covering boards, cabinets, and an entirely new interior, cockpit and bridge. The cockpit was fitted with a fighting chair & rocket launcher from Release Marine and IMS American Marine Electronics installed electronics while Bausch American Towers rigged the beautiful new tower & integrated hard top.

When your boat is hauled, a thorough inspection of all running gear is essential to the proper performance and reliability of your vessel. One key component of the running gear to pay special attention to are the cutlass bearing(s). It is important to check the play in the cutlass bearings and renew them if needed. A common question is “When are new bearings actually needed and what is the proper method of determining when they are needed?” The cutlass bearings clearance to the shaft should be checked using a feeler gauge or dial indicator to determine the existing clearance between the shaft and the bearing materials. A two-inch shaft has the tolerance of a .006″ minimum to a .012″ maximum.

The 55′ Jarrett Bay Builders Choice was in our yard last month for a complete mezzanine retrofit and other upgrades prior to tournament season. Mezzanine cockpit refits are becoming a popular project on sportfish boats that were built with a conventional standing-room-only cockpit layout.
The basic process is to remove or cut-down old cabinetry and ice boxes for the addition of a mezzanine level and seating. This upgrade often provides just as much (or more) space for coolers or freezers below the sofas and steps, and in this case, even allowed for a larger engine room entrance – all without requiring any changes to the salon door placement. During this refit, the service department performed a number of improvements including:
