In this final leg of a 12 part series, Randy Ramsey reflects on the most influential people to contribute to Jarrett Bay’s success over the last 25 years:
For the past 11 months it has been a pleasure to share some of the stories about our first 25 years and the many people who have helped to mold the company and contributed to our success. For the 12th and final installment of the series I think it would be appropriate to write about what started all the excitement 25 years ago: hull number 1 “Sensation”.

In this 12 part series, Randy Ramsey reflects each month on the most influential people to contribute to Jarrett Bay’s success over the last 25 years.
For the past few months, I have written about many of the individuals who influenced the early years of our company and who shared the passion and desire to ensure our company would grow and prosper. Each person has left their mark and their contributions will continue to influence us for many years to come. One group of people I am proud to include in this series, is the roster of more than 200 employees who have in the past and/or to this day build and repair the boats that are the foundation of all that we do at Jarrett Bay.
This month is dedicated to the craftsmen and women who have, and continue to, work here day in and day out. In many industries it seems the employees come to work each day just for a paycheck. As I write this and hear the sounds of power tools in the background, I am proud to say that isn’t the case at Jarrett Bay.

In this 12 part series, Randy Ramsey reflects each month on the most influential people to contribute to Jarrett Bay’s success over the last 25 years.
Throughout my life and since we started Jarrett Bay, I have been blessed to have been surrounded by people that were able to share our passion. Often times when I would look around, it was hard to imagine how we would make it to the next step. But each time, there was a person there to help guide us and willing to share our dream. Over the last nine months you have read about some of those people who were instrumental in our success and who selflessly gave of themselves. As I started to write about this month’s VIP, it occurred to me that I have more people than months left to recognize them in with this 12 part series. So this month is dedicated to an amazing group of friends who shared our dream and played a major role in our success.

No matter how good of an idea we may have, or how dedicated we are to reaching a goal, often times it takes others who share your dream or believe in what you are trying to accomplish to help you bring it to reality. As we grow up we all depend on the wisdom of our parents, family and friends to support us; But as we mature, we often are helped by people that not only believe in an idea, but in you.
In the fall of 1986, Jim Luxton and I shared a dream of building a charter boat to replace an aging one so we could compete with any boat in the NC fleet. We had the vision, the determination, and the desire to accomplish the goal, but neither of us had the financial resources to bring it to reality. As I look back on that fall, I wonder how many great ideas go unrealized for the same reason.

In this 12 part series, Randy Ramsey reflects each month on the most influential people to contribute to Jarrett Bay’s success over the last 25 years.
When we made the decision to build the first Jarrett Bay “Sensation” in the fall of 1986, it was apparent that we had embarked on a challenge like none we had ever taken on before. While several of us had limited boat building experience, we all had a passion to build a boat that was different and would emulate the ones built by the pioneering Omie Tillett. Boats that would provide a smooth and efficient ride to the gulfstream, and incorporate a more modern look and finish. As we talked with people and gathered information about the hull form, shaft angle and cabin placement – among other things, Capt. Omie suggested that we contact Glen Haught, affectionately known as “P-Nut”. P-Nut had worked with Omie at Sportsman Boatworks in all aspects of the boat building process. He was a very talented artist and craftsman, diligently working on the shop floor during the day, and studying at night to become a naval architect.

Through the past 25 years, our company has certainly experienced a lot of changes. With those changes we have seen our share of challenges, but each time we have seen people rise to the occasion. In the late 1990’s, our company was expanding faster than we could have imagined. We had six boats under construction, were operating a full-service repair yard, and were considering a move to our current location at the Jarrett Bay Industrial Park. By then, we had been in business for more than 12 years and had assembled a team that could take on any boat building or repair project, but we were never prepared for the challenges that we faced as we expanded. It was clear to me that I would need to find a partner that shared my vision to expand and improve our boats and in this case I found him working as a carpenter on our shop floor.

“The difference a day makes” was never as true as the day I met Jim Luxton. It was a cool spring day, and he was at the helm of the “Sea Jade” as we prepared to take a multi-boat charter group out of Harker’s Island. The “Sea Jade” was one of the largest in the fleet and Jim was the senior Captain in our group that day. After a short discussion, Jim let me know he planned to fish east of the Cape and suggested I do the same. I, of course, went south. And from that day, a great friendship was born on being able to disagree while at the same time agreeing to merge our passion for boats and fishing to eventually form Jarrett Bay Boatworks.

Soon after we relocated Jarrett Bay Boatworks from the original location in Williston to Marshallberg, NC, our company began expanding faster than we could imagine. We had four boats under construction and started the service and repair yard. With the expansion came a host of problems that had never occurred to me, like book keeping, human resources and inventory management to name a few. After all, our company was founded by a dream to build a better boat, so the business side of the company was an afterthought in the early years. In March of 1993, we decided to hire a person to manage our office.
